Due to a growing number of new business enquiries and new tool orders, this manufacturing facility has a fantastic opportunity for an experienced, flexible and energetic Tooling Project Manager to manage the design and procurement of new tooling for our customers’ products.
The Role
Reporting to the Director of Engineering & Technology, you will be responsible for managing and executing all new tooling projects, from initial customer enquiry through tool design and procurement to successful production.
It will be a busy and varied role, in which you will:
· work with customers to develop and refine their new product designs for successful moulding;
· determine the best tool design and moulding process options for production of new parts, in conjunction with external toolmakers;
· support the commercial team in producing tool and part costings for customer quotations;
· manage the procurement of new tools from external toolmakers;
· review and sign-off toolmakers’ proposals, detailed designs and finished tools, and be their prime technical contact during tool development;
· use structured project management processes throughout each project and maintain good project records;
· work with the engineering team to design and deliver related production equipment (eg tooling automation);
· maintain close working relationships with customers’ tooling managers and designers, and with external toolmakers;
· use your skills and expertise to help with other tooling and engineering work within the department.
Personal Skills
You will need to be enthusiastic, motivated and have experience of plastic part and injection mould tool design and production.
You might be a Toolmaker yourself, or might be responsible for designing and procuring tools for another moulder or OEM.
You will be someone who thrives in a busy environment as part of a close team, enjoys working closely with customers and suppliers on a variety of projects, and wants to see your skills and experience deliver results in a growing business.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
· Skilled in plastic injection mould tool design, and DFM of moulded parts.
· Direct personal experience of toolmaking would be a distinct advantage.
· Strong knowledge of plastic injection moulding processes, materials and equipment.
· Fluent in reading technical drawings for plastic injection mould tools. Conversant with 2D and 3D CAD.
· Able to identify and recommend best tool design options for different cases (eg runner systems, ejection systems, cooling options, materials, etc) considering cost, quality and performance.
· Able to estimate likely costs of different tool design options. Sound commercial judgement.
· Good level of numeracy and literacy.
· Project management skills – some formal training would be an advantage.
· Proficient in the use of office IT systems including MS Office, Word, Excel, Outlook
· Some ability to set and use moulding machines for trials would a useful but not essential skill. Hands-on ability with tool room machinery including lathes, milling machines, surface grinders and spark eroders etc, would also be a bonus.
The role may involve occasional travel to customers and toolmakers.
